If you asked the average person what bikers wear, most of them would answer “a leather jacket”. This piece of riding gear, while iconic, isn’t the best choice for warmer weather. After all, dark colors absorb light, and leather isn’t very breathable. Finding motorcycle riding gear that looks good while still keeping you cool in hot weather and provides adequate protection can be difficult. That’s why the experts at Riding High Harley-Davidson® have created this convenient hot weather motorcycle riding gear buying guide.

Protection Vs. Comfort

Summer motorcycle riding gear needs to be both comfortable to wear during hot weather and provide adequate protection in case of a crash. Short sleeved clothing might make it easier to stay cool, but it also won’t provide much in the way of protection. At the same time, you don’t want to have to deal with heat exhaustion mid-ride. When shopping for summer motorcycle riding gear, look for clothing that has long-sleeves and built-in mesh and vents to help you stay cool.

The Right Helmet

Head injuries are serious, so you should always wear a DOT certified helmet when you ride a motorcycle no matter the weather. If you find your normal helmet to be a bit stuffy during the summer, switch to a half helmet or find a full helmet that has built-in ventilation.

Sunglasses

The sun’s bright, glaring rays can cause eye strain and disrupt your visibility. If your motorcycle helmet lacks built-in eye protection, invest in a decent pair of sunglasses. They don’t just look good, they can protect your eyes!

Gloves

Riding gloves will help protect your hands in the event of a crash. However, it’s difficult to grip your bike’s controls if your hands are covered in sweat. Find a set of riding gloves that are sturdy enough to protect your hands and have mesh paneling to keep your hands cool.

Bandana/Neckerchief

Bandanas and neckerchiefs are two of the most popular accessories among bikers riding in hot weather. While bandanas are useful for keeping the sweat out of your eyes, neckerchiefs can be wetted and tied around your neck to keep you cool. Even better, neckerchiefs can be re-wetted as many times as needed.

Cooling Vests

Cooling vests act like a neckerchief for your entire body. Simply soak it in water, wring it out, and then wear it under your jacket. Cooling vests are very useful for motorcycle riders who plan to do a lot of riding in hot weather conditions.
