With the ice and snow of winter finally gone, motorcycle enthusiasts are looking forward to once again hitting open roads and cruising city streets. However, before you start up your engine, you’ll want to give your model a thorough examination. Winters can be hard on motorcycles, and we strongly recommend following our maintenance advice below to ensure your model is ready for its first ride of the season.

Exterior Care

Before you get started on the more complicated maintenance tasks, be sure to give the exterior of your motorcycle some TLC. To start, give your model a thorough scrub to prevent rust or corrosion. Next, be sure to inspect your tires for any signs of damage, before topping them off with some pressurized air. Don’t forget to double-check the air pressure reading before and after you fill your tires to ensure you’re not over or underinflating them.

Interior Care

If you didn't attach your battery to a tender while in storage, it will probably be dead come springtime. While you may be able to recharge the battery, it’s also possible that you’ll have to replace it entirely. If you are able to charge your battery, remember to clean the poles with a combination of water and baking soda to remove any battery acid that may be sitting on the surface.

You’ll also need to flush and replace any fluids that show signs of discoloration, debris, or condensation in tubes or reservoirs. The exception to this rule is your engine oil and gas, which will need to be flushed and replaced immediately after taking your model out of storage.
